Low and behold it was a passive (I think) regen cycle as it indicated high exhaust temp. I was running about 1800 rpms and tested it I could put the throttle at idle but the engine remained at 1500 rpm. I just kept pulling and doing my thing. A while later the light went off and soot went down to 17% from 78%.
If you are done operating it and the light is still on, leave the tractor running a little above idle (1200 rpm or so)to allow it to finish the process.
