The 2018 and 2019 models do not have that problem due to Chevy making the pistons reinforced for the 2018 and 19 models. If i were you I would trade your cruze in for a 2018 or 2019 model.

The first P0299 you get does not cause a check engine light, it goes into limp mode which allows only 3 psi of boost. On the next ignition cycle the car is back to normal power, If you get another P0299 on that cycle it turns on the check engine light. If you don’t it clears the code and it goes back to step one.
