I went to visit the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion today April 29th. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a free tour of the house and I learned a lot about the history of the residence. The guide explained to us that it was build over a period of 3+ years and served as Senators Robert Jemison Jr.'s Town house away from his plantation.
The Van de Graff family . In 1890, Jemison’s granddaughter, Minnie Cherokee married Adrian Van de Graaff in 1890 and they moved into the mansion. Adrian was a substitute-player on Yale’s first 11-man football team. Adrian became a professor of law at the University of Alabama and in 1892 UA fielded its first football team.The Family.
