Some guilds are now offering a weekly credit allowance to keep you with them. As for getting screwed over by a missing GM, one of my alts is in such a guild right now.

This system is designed to prevent dead beat guild leaders. I for one like this system. It is the responsibility of the guild leader to log in and keep the guild alive. If you do not log in then you deserve to loose the guild. As far as how long the guild leader logs in is a factor of real life. I have 3 guilds, one I created, 2 I inherited.

I made a "story" chat window with only story dialogue and party/private messages, and an "everything" channel with all dialogues except General Chat. Then there's the default chat button as well which has General in it. The GM of my guild left for close to several months. The officers designated a new GM who has since become a trusted and well liked leader. Recently, the original GM came back and demanded lead back. It really split the guild and after much discussion we ended up denying the original GM his request for reinstatement.
