I am going to guess he had 2 tickets one from India to Schengen area and then another from Schengen area to the USA. If this is the case the airline providing the flight leaving India was correct in denying boarding for the missing Schengen visa as the flight to USA was with a different airline and no longer a connection but 2 separate flights.

Legitimate they may be, but a quick search on TripAdvisor for "JustFly" will bring up several threads, most of which contain a litany of complaints. I would recommend booking directly with the airline, as: 1) the airline will have "live pricing".Kayak.com and justfly.com. Kayak quotes a fare for a pice using justfly.com and when you go to the site the fare goes up by about $150. You can get the originally quoted fare w/o the $150 up charge by going directly to the airline's own website.
