My 1897 has no serial number...only the letters WRACO (which I assume stand for Winchester Repeating Arms Company) on the receiver where the serial number is usually found. It also has a steel butt plate (really soaks up recoil!).I just acquired a Model 97 Trench Gun. I have been trying to determine exactly what I have. Attempts at dating on one site indicates a production date of Dec. 1941, while another in dates it to 1947. The barrel and receiver have matching “E” serial numbers. Top of the barrel has the Winchester markings and a flaming bomb.Using the pin as a lever, rotate the magazine tube about one quarter tum counter-clockwise until it stops. Pull the magazine tube up toward the front until it stops. 3. Remove the buttplate, and use a stock tool or a long shanked screwdriver to back out the stock bolt. Remove the butt stock toward the rear. 5.Barry, There are lots of decent Model 1897 shotguns out there to choose from, and it is my personal favorite in the Winchester shotgun line-up. If you wnat one in 16-gauge that you can shoot, it will need to be a Model “97” marked gun, and it needs to be marked “2 3/4 CHAM” on the left rear side of the barrel. Bert.
