Just beat it today, my advice is to aim for getting a perfect score on level 1. The extra lives you get on the secret level can make the difference when you get to the final level. Other than that pray hard to RNGesus and hope you get the slime boss on level 3 and the lava zone on level 5. Even with slowing the game down for more reaction time, there's NO checkpoint after the first 5th of the level. It just goes, and goes, with horrible 1-tile tracks and rising/falling mushrooms.
