There is a thread on RFC 's Marlin - H&R - NEF forum about someone having a broken 39A firing pin and having to replace it that I think has the information. Edit to Add: Just spoke to my brother on the phone, he has a collection of older Marlin 39-39A and he says on the older guns, the firing pin falls out when you remove the bolt.

Fitting the firing pin not only means trimming to length, but also the angle on the end of the tail. It it is not right, it hits the side of the safety notch in the frame when the bolt tries to go to the rear, and keeps it from turning. I Had to adjust the angle on the tail of the Glend I got for that reason.

The lever positively retracts the firing pin on opening and blocks full movement until it locks the bolt shut. If it DIDN'T move freely, you'd have a problem. Clean the slot the firing pin rides in well, make sure there's no impacted crud where front of the pin's "leg" rides in the bolt and you'll be good. I did this on both my 39CL's. A small nylon washer between the frame and the lever spring. On the underside of the frame, just ahead of the lever is a small screw that holds the lever spring in place. Placing a spacer between the frame and the spring lessened the pressure exerted by the spring on the lever.
