The crf300L isn't the best bike out there but it's miles "better" than a XT250. I've had the XT225 and it's an amazing little bike and at the same height as you I liked the low seat but I have a 250L now and wouldn't go back. The XT is a pile. Off-road, the lack of bite (and power in general) is manageable, but on road at speed, it made lane splitting all the more nerve-racking. I rode all 3 models. Compared to my KLX all of these were way smoother (less shaky) to ride.The KLX300 still isn't quite the unicorn everyone is crying out for. But the 300 is a great base. You could easily turn this into a light adventure bike. With some mods you could extract some more power and shorten the gearing to make it a dedicated dirt bike.
