For the record, I watched the first two episodes back to back, and I even entertained the thought of a third, before deciding that it really was time for bed. That’s impressive, whichever way you slice it. 2. Story pacing feels brisk and assured. 2. Our drama world is big. Our OTP romance is the heart and soul of this drama, and Show does a good job of making it front-and-center a lot of the time, but there are also times when the focus shifts to other things and other characters. It’s a natural effect of our drama world being so large and sprawling.1. This is not primarily a romance. What I mean is, yes, there is an OTP, and there are a few lovelines in this story, but aside from that, this is also a wuxia, with lots of action in the way of a main mission, and the many battles surrounding it. I think it’s helpful to adjust your viewing lens for that. 2.THE SHORT VERDICT: A fairly typical contract-marriage-meets-terminal-illness sort of melodrama that doesn’t pack many narrative surprises. The surprises mostly come in the form of the fantastic deliveries by the main cast. Namely, UEE is flat-out fantastic in this. So is Lee Seo Jin, and so is little munchkin Shin Rin Ah.Even though Descendants of the Sun is not very well-written and far from subtle, there are things to enjoy in this show, if you’re willing to close your eyes to its shortcomings.
