Frankly, snow tires make the biggest difference as long as you have any AWD. I strongly recommend Blizzaks. Subaru (Outback), Lexus (Rx), and Tesla (S/X), in my experience, do very well handling 80 and Truckee areas. But when the snow is heavy on the road, better to not drive if possible.r/southlaketahoe: The subreddit for all things South Lake Tahoe, on both sides of the stateline

Kirkwood is the best skiing in the area IMHO. It is remote though. Flying into Reno is your best bet but Sacramento is not too bad if you're able to get a good flight deal. For advanced skiers squaw, kirkwood or mammoth (not really tahoe) are the way to go.

A lot more quiet compared to Tahoe, but the skiing is better IMO (nothing against Tahoe because the skiing their is excellent as well, mammoth has 1000 more feet in elevation compared to the highest peak at a ski resort in Tahoe which is at heavenly at 10,000ft elevation). Mammoth is usually open for 8-9 months out of the year for …2016 Tahoe advice. Hi everyone! My family is growing and I refuse to be a minivan owner. My wife really likes the Tahoe ride height and features and I am a big fan of the LS package but the sticker price of used Tahoe’s is steep. Edgewood Restaurant @ Edgewood Tahoe has good food and great views. It's one of the higher-end restaurants in town and is probably booked up for this weekend by now (as I imagine many places are), but it's worth a shot. I also like the patio at Riva Grill. More casual than Edgewood and not as good a view, but still a staple. Lake Tahoe is a touristy lake in a very nature filled area with a small community and some casinos. It's on a mountain that snows. Reno is on the other side of the mountain and also snows some and has a city that is mostly based on casinos and suburbia. The most visually appealing casino inside is Hard Rock, since there is lots of memorabilia and they have been remodeled since they took it over a few years ago.
