Kirkwood is the best skiing in the area IMHO. It is remote though. Flying into Reno is your best bet but Sacramento is not too bad if you're able to get a good flight deal. For advanced skiers squaw, kirkwood or mammoth (not really tahoe) are the way to go.

Palisades has way way way more challenging terrain available, including lots of true expert terrain. But the true beginner stuff is really just at high camp and the first venture area.
